City of Dreams: Los Angeles Interiors by Annie Kelly ; photography by Tim Street-Porter
Subtitled “Inspiring Homes of Architects,
Designers, and Artists,” this latest volume from the uber-prolific
husband-and-wife team of photographer Street-Porter and writer Kelly introduces
the creative home with a brief history of the typology—from Gamble to Gehry and
beyond—before diving deeper into 21 houses. It’s notable how many are
historical, lovingly brought back to life by their owners, including the
authors’ own home. In fact, besides Peter Shire’s childhood home and Chuck
Arnoldi’s house he built for himself more than 25 years ago, there is only one
newly designed and built house, Clare Graham and Bob Breen’s MorYork House
designed by Robert Kerr. All in all, the book gives a vicarious peek into
art-filled and beautifully designed homes owned by people who fuel LA’s
creative economy.
