Hines on Gill: Modernist Cottages:
The Democratic Architecture Of Irving Gill
Saturday, September 17, 2016
Join the SAH/SCC this fall as we celebrate the work of Irving Gill with three separate events and tours. This series of events is held in conjunction with the upcoming exhibit “Irving Gill: Simplicity and Reform” and is co-sponsored by SAH/SCC and the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara and in conjunction with the Southern California Chapter of Docomomo US.
First up, the definitive word on Irving Gill comes during a very special afternoon with one of Southern California’s most important authors and historians: Thomas S. Hines, Ph.D. His book, Irving Gill and the Architecture of Reform (Monacelli Press, 2000) is the definitive monograph on this important architect.
As a professor of history, architecture and urban design at UCLA, Hines’ books include Richard Neutra and the Search for Modern Architecture and Burnham of Chicago: Architect and Planner. Hine’s essays have been published in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Journal of Urban History, Architectural Record, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Hines has held Guggenheim, NEH and Getty fellowships. The lecture is free to the public and will include a reception afterward with light refreshments on the patio of the historic Miles Playhouse (1929, John Byers) in Santa Monica.
Check out our two other Irving Gill related events this fall: a behind-the-scenes tour of the exhibit Irving Gill: Simplicity and Reform and is co-sponsored by SAH/SCC and the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara and an Irving Gill home tour in Los Angeles.
