Modern Patrons: Kappe
Tour and Talk: Sherman Oaks
Friday, May 25, 2012
Join the SAH/SCC for a very special Friday afternoon salon with Robert Hayes, original owner of the Dr. and Mrs. Robert Hayes Residence (1959) designed by Ray Kappe, FAIA. The most recent in our popular Modern Patrons series, this exclusive event features a dialogue about the process of engaging and building a modern home with one of the most significant modern architects in postwar Los Angeles. In addition, Kappe himself will be present and share his approach to siting and designing the home.
As a mathematician for some of the largest postwar technology companies and ultimately the Dean of the Graduate School in Information Science at UCLA, Robert M. Hayes Ph.D. and his wife (an artist) commissioned Kappe to design and build their dream house. The lot on the perimeter of the Royal Woods development backed up to busy Sepulveda Blvd. In the final design, Kappe provided the Hayes' with the perfect combination of openness and a feeling of seclusion in a city setting.
This late afternoon event is scheduled for the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, so why not kick off the summer season with a very special afternoon of architecture? Wine and tapas will be served.
Attendance for this event is limited, so reserve early to avoid disappointment. Tickets for Patron-level members of the SAH/SCC only and are $35. If you are not a Patron level member, become one now, or ask to be placed on the waiting list by emailing us at info@sahscc.org. If event capacity is not reached, individuals on the waiting list will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is part of "Ray Kappe: Apotheosis" featuring a lecture by Dana Hutt, on Thursday, May 24th and a 5-home tour on Saturday, May 26th.
