“More is More” with Hutton Wilkinson on Designer Tony Duquette
In-person and Zoom salon
Saturday, June 22, 2024
Join SAH/SCC for the third installment in
the series VISUAL WORLD with Victoria Lautman, More is More: Hutton Wilkinson
on Designer Tony Duquette at the historic Neutra Office Building, 2379 Glendale
Boulevard in Silver Lake and via Zoom.
Legendary Hollywood designer and artist
Tony Duquette was as comfortable creating Tony-award winning costumes as he was
orchestrating the gardens of a 100-acre Malibu ranch. His sets for MGM films
are memorably over-the-top, while the opulent jewels he fashioned for famous
clients (including Tom Ford and the Duchess of Windsor) are now sought-after
collector’s items. In fact, Duquette’s restless creativity oozed into every
facet of his life before he died in 1999, but it was his Beverly Hills estate,
Dawnridge, that most embodied Duquette’s uniquely “maximalist” style both
indoors and in the extraordinary gardens.
Hutton Wilkinson grew up in Los Angeles and intended to join the
family’s architecture firm before an article about Tony Duquette led him while
still a teenager to apprentice at the designer’s studio. Eventually launching
his own design firm, Wilkinson continued a close collaboration with his mentor
on high-profile projects throughout the world, and the two established an
official business partnership in 1994. Since Duquette’s demise, Wilkinson – now
Creative Director and President of Tony Duquette Inc.—has carefully restored
and augmented Dawnridge, documenting the property’s complex history in his 2018
book, Tony Duquette’s Dawnridge. A series of earlier books by Wilkinson
also highlight the breadth of Duquette’s talent: Tony Duquette (2007), More
Is More, Tony Duquette (2009), and Tony Duquette, Hutton Wilkinson,
Jewelry (2011). Tony Duquette’s Dawnridge will be available for sale
and signing, courtesy of Book Soup.
VISUAL WORLD with Victoria Lautman explores
the constructed environment in its various forms: architecture, design,
fashion, art, landscape, or the intersection of several. A long-time
cultural journalist and former host on Chicago Public Radio, Lautman
has contributed to dozens of international newspapers and magazines
including Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Metropolitan Home, Elle
Décor, and many others. In 2017 she published the The Vanishing
Stepwells of India (Merrell, London), a groundbreaking book about the
little-known architectural marvels, with her photographs featured in several
exhibitions including at the UCLA’s Fowler Museum.
