Engineering the House of Kappe
In-person and Zoom Program, Silver Lake
Saturday, September 21,2024, 01:00 PM

Join SAH/SCC for the next installment in the series VISUAL WORLD WITH VICTORIA LAUTMAN, Present at the Creation: Engineering the House of Kappe. Lautman welcomes a special trio whose roots extend back over six decades, each representing an important segment of the SoCal architectural saga. Renowned architectural historian, educator, and writer Shelly Kappe has lived in the iconic home designed by her husband Ray since 1967 - a house “widely regarded as one of the finest Modern houses in the United States” according to the Los Angeles Conservancy.

Ensuring this multi-level, complex structure was buildable, seismically sound, and up to code was structural engineer Richard (Bud) Brown whose firm, Reiss and Brown (later Reiss Brown Ekmekji) forged a unique relationship with Ray, working closely on dozens of Kappe projects beginning in 1960. Architect Finn Kappe, one of three siblings raised in the landmark home, ultimately became a partner in his father’s practice and continues to steer the firm following Ray’s death in 2019—ever expanding the Kappe legacy.

At the request of the interviewees, all attendees at the in-person event will be required to wear a mask. Also please note the special start time of 1PM.

VISUAL WORLD: Engineering the House of Kappe, Saturday, September 21st, 2024; 1:00 PM (NOTE SPECIAL TIME) PST.
