Join SAH/SCC for a special salon event in the historic Poppy Peak neighborhood of Pasadena on Saturday, May 31stat 11AM.
The Thomas & Barbara Wirick House (Calvin Straub/Buff Straub & Hensman, 1958) was designed as the influential USC professor Calvin Straub was merging his practice with former students Conrad Buff and Donald Hensman – establishing the influential Pasadena architectural firm of Buff, Straub, & Hensman. It is described by the National Register of Historic Places as one of the firms definitive achievements in residential post and beam architecture… a composition of modules woven with lines (framing) and planes (walls).
Straubs design for the Wiricks is an important and nearly intact example of his architectural ideas and vocabulary. Dubbed the father of California post and beam architecture by author and critic Esther McCoy, he found inspiration in both the arts and crafts movement as well as from Californias early modernists.
In this spectacular setting, SAH/SCC will welcome Stephanie Cisneros from the City of Pasadena about the Mills Act. This conversation will be led by SAH/SCC Board Member, Lilian Pfaff. The Mills Act can provide owners with property tax relief in return for contracting with the city to do a series of prescribed restoration projects. This event will reveal how that process works and who benefits from it.
This event is limited. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.
