This June, SAH/SCC will welcome author Steve Keylon on his book The Modern Architecture of Hugh Michael Kaptur (Palm Springs Preservation Foundation,2019), which explores the life and work of this modern architect. Keylon discusses hundreds of Kaptur projects—some that attendees will be familiar with and others they will be surprised by.
With the aid of hundreds of hours of interviews, archival materials at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, and Kaptur’s own materials, Keylon traces the arc of the remarkable career of Hugh Kaptur (b. 1931) from the avant-garde modern designs of the 1950s and 1960s, to his more organic modern designs of the late-1960s and 1970s.
Keylon is the vice-president of the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation. He also wrote The Design of Herbert W. Burns (Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, 2018) and is editor of Eden, the Journal of the California Garden & Landscape History Society. Keylon is also a founding member of the Stewardship Council of The Cultural Landscape Foundation and serves on the board of DocomomoUS/SoCal.
