A beautifully lavish volume for a legendarily lush place has been produced by Woods and Walla, with foreword by prolific local architect Marc Appleton, AIA. A separate section on George Washington Smith (1876-1930) notes his great influence through a number of revival styles. An essay by architect/landscape architect and SAH/SCC Life Member M. Brian Tichenor, AIA, explores the region’s garden history. It’s heartening—though not surprising in Santa Barbara—to see history so revered through meticulous restorations. Nineteen projects dating from 1837 to today encompass homes, ranches, and gardens. As befits today’s needs (and probably a way to maintain the properties), some are open as event spaces or temporary rentals, as well as house museums. This reader would have liked more consistent info on the projects’ status today. But that’s not really what this volume is about. It’s about beauty, heritage, and the good life along the Edenic coast.
