Join SAH/SCC as we celebrate the publication of Restoring the California State Capitol: A Labor of Love (California State Capitol Museum Volunteer Association, 2026) by John C. Worsley, FAIA. Worsley was the State Architect, appointed by then-Governor Ronald Reagan and served in that capacity into the first term of Governor Jerry Brown’s administration.
Dick Cowan, will share the story of an insider’s account of the landmark restoration of California’s historic 1869 Capitol building. Today, California’s Capitol stands not only as the seat of state government but also as a powerful symbol of our representative democracy. This book weaves together compelling stories from Worsley’s unique perspective.
Worsley recounts the twists and turns that led lawmakers to reject demolition and embrace restoration after decades of well-meaning but flawed alterations. Next, he reveals how the team achieved the delicate balance between honoring historic preservation and implementing the seismic upgrades needed to protect the building from California’s notorious earthquakes. Lastly, he shares the dedicated craftspeople and artists whose passion and expertise brought new life to the Capitol, restoring its original beauty and timeless pride.
