Please join the SAH/SCC and the John Lautner Foundation for a rare visit to the Mauer Residence (1947, John Lautner) in Mount Washington. In-person attendees will be able to tour the home as well as participate in an on-site panel discussion. Although Zoom participants will not be able to experience the Mauer Residence in person, they will be able to thoughtfully engage with the panel.
Originally Edgar and Allison Mauer asked Frank Lloyd Wright to design a house for them. However, it could not be constructed due to World War II. On Wright’s recommendation, Lautner was the architect who ultimately designed and realized the house. The house is now in in the process of being restored by the grandson of the original owners.
Panelists include David Mauer who will talk about his grandparents’ legacy, their collection, and the history of the planning and designing process by Frank Lloyd Wright and John Lautner. Frank Escher, principal of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, former Administrator of the John Lautner Archive, and editor of John Lautner: Architect (Artemis, 1994; Princeton Architectural Press, 1998) will join the panel and discuss the various collaborations on the prefabricated roof structure by the structural engineer, Edgardo Contini. Sian Winship, President of the Society of Architectural Historians/Southern California chapter will lead the discussion and talk about the importance of preservation. As a panel topic, the three specialists will talk about next steps and ways to preserve the house as a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument. Light refreshments will be served.
