Join SAH/SCC as we explore the Cliff May Ranchos neighborhood of Long Beach. Formerly known as the Lakewood Ranchos Estates, this track of homes designed by Cliff May and Chris Choate between 1953 and 1955 is a classic postwar ranch house tract. We will begin the day with a lecture by Cliff May scholar, Katie Kaford Papineau. After lunch on your own, explore seven homes within the neighborhood.
Built by developer Ross Cortese (best known for his later senior developments such as Leisure World), Cortese was inspired by a demonstration project: the construction of “Factory House” in Sullivan Canyon. The Factory House project was an early demonstration of the speedy construction methods May and Choate anticipated for their prefabricated home business. Although Cortese was impressed, he couldn’t wait for the architects to build the prefab business and so he constructed these ranch house designs conventionally.
Lakewood Ranchos Estates featured 3-bedroom/2-bath models on large lots adjacent to the planned community of Lakewood. Lakewood Ranch Estates marketed the development on the strength of the “Californian” model, an “all new, architect designed contemporary ranch style home…with wide overhangs, floor-to-ceiling windows, and indoor-outdoor planning. The merits of the Californian spread far and wide through magazines such as Sunset, House Beautiful, and Better Homes and Gardens.
Come see what $11,500 would buy you in 1955!
Much like the Eichler home developments, the Cliff May Ranchos are undergoing a renaissance. Once again families are choosing them for their generous integration of interior and exterior space.
